Hello Friends and Neighbors,

I wanted to let you all know that solar energy is now available to renters and homeowners alike with no installation required. Community solar is a program approved by the Maryland Public Service Commission in 2017 that lets customers subscribe to a 25-acre solar farm in Ft. Washington and receive a percentage of that farm’s electric output as credits off their Pepco bill. It’s an effortless way to reduce your carbon footprint by 10 tons each year while saving 5% on your energy bill.

We’re working with Neighborhood Sun to get Marylanders involved in this innovative energy model that’s already available in 42 states (and counting!) Neighborhood Sun manages customers’ subscription sizes and handles any inquiries you may have about community solar. They are partnered with Summit Ridge Energy, the developers who install and maintain the solar farm. Panorama Landfill is a former waste site that has been converted into a pollinator-friendly plot producing 5,000 KWAC of clean energy.

Subscribers are allotted a share of the solar farm and subscribe to a percentage of the farm’s total output. Each month, you are sold enough solar credits to cover 75-100% of your monthly usage. Every solar credit you buy from Neighborhood Sun is worth a full kWh reduction from your Pepco bill. You buy solar kWh for 5% below what Pepco is charging, and Neighborhood Sun lets Pepco know that your energy has already been paid for. Instant savings for slowing down climate change!

Neighborhood Sun is offering a five-year contract that guarantees rates 5% below what Pepco charges for a full kWh. For those five years, as Pepco’s rates go up or down, Neighborhood Sun will adjust theirs to stay 5% below Pepco’s. If you move within Pepco territory during those five years, you can take your subscription with you—no cost or hassle! If you move out of Pepco territory or to a home where you do not pay your own electricity bill, Neighborhood Sun asks for 60 days’ notice to cancel your contract. Otherwise, a $250 cancellation fee is incurred.

Based on the average MD electric bill, that’s over $400 in savings while reducing our state’s dependency on dirty energy. Plus, it’s easily paired with existing wind contracts or rooftop solar panels. Renters rejoice, you can take it with you from lease-to-lease! Their rate is inclusive of electricity, distribution, and taxes. There are no upfront costs or fees to join, you’ll only pay for the solar power you need.

You can fill out an application at neighborhoodsun.solar by clicking the “Reserve your Spot” button in the top-right corner. If you have any questions about signing up, Rachael and Barbara are the customer service representatives available via the LiveChat feature or by phone. Be prepared to provide a checking/savings account, a credit card, and your Social Security Number to run a credit check. If you have a credit freeze, Rachael or Barbara can help you work around the issue. You’ll receive a final contract approximately one week after your application is submitted to finalize the amount of solar credits you’ll receive each month.
